Gangs are groups of people who come together, often engaging in criminal activities or violence. Being involved in a gang can seem like a way to belong or feel protected, but it often leads to danger, legal trouble, and harm to yourself or others. It’s important to understand the risks of gang involvement and know that there is support available to help you avoid these situations.

There are many reasons why young people might feel drawn to gangs. Some examples include:

  • Belonging: Some join gangs to feel accepted or part of a group.

  • Protection: Others may feel safer in areas where gang violence is common.

  • Money: Gangs often involve criminal activities, such as drug dealing, which may seem like a way to make money quickly.

While these might seem like solutions, being in a gang can put you in dangerous situations, leading to violence, exploitation, and criminal charges.

  • Knife crime: Gangs are often associated with knife crime, including carrying knives and using them to intimidate or harm others.

  • Drug dealing: Gangs frequently involve drug-related activities, including selling illegal substances. Being caught with drugs can lead to serious legal consequences.

  • County lines: This is when gangs exploit young people to transport drugs from cities to rural areas.

  • Violence and intimidation: Gang members may pressure others into committing violent acts or use threats to maintain control.

If you feel pressure to join a gang or you’re already involved, it’s important to know that there are ways to get help.

  • Talk to someone you trust: This could be a family member, teacher, youth worker, or school nurse. They can offer support and help you make safer choices.

  • Youth organisations: Many charities and groups help young people find safe activities and support outside of gang life. These organisations can connect you with positive opportunities and mentors.
