A young carer is someone under 18 who looks after a family member or friend who can’t manage on their own due to illness, disability, mental health issues, or substance misuse. As a young carer, you might help with household chores, personal care, or provide emotional support. Being a carer can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when balancing school and other activities, but it’s important to know that help is available.

  • Helping to take care of a parent, sibling, or grandparent who is unwell.

  • Doing extra housework, cooking, or cleaning because a family member can’t manage.

  • Supporting someone with washing, dressing, or moving around.

  • Providing emotional support to someone with a mental health condition or addiction.

  • Worrying about the person you care for when you’re at school or with friends.

Caring for someone can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging. You might feel:

  • Stressed or anxious about the person you’re caring for.

  • Tired from balancing schoolwork and caring responsibilities.

  • Isolated or different from your friends because they don’t have the same responsibilities.

  • Guilty for wanting time for yourself or worrying that you’re not doing enough.

  • Talk to someone you trust: Let a teacher, school nurse, or trusted adult know what you’re going through so they can support you.

  • Take time for yourself: It’s important to make time for hobbies and spending time with friends. You deserve time to relax.

  • Ask for help: There are organisations that support young carers and can offer advice, counselling, or breaks from caring.

  • Speak up at school: Let your teachers know if caring responsibilities are affecting your schoolwork. They can give you extra time or support if needed.
