Hygiene is all about keeping yourself clean and healthy to prevent illness and stay feeling your best. Self-care goes beyond hygiene – it’s about looking after your overall well-being, including physical, mental, and emotional health. Good hygiene and self-care routines help you feel confident and ready to tackle the day.

Keeping clean helps protect you from germs that can cause infections or illnesses. It also helps prevent body odour, acne, and other skin problems. Having a good hygiene routine can boost your self-esteem and help you feel more confident around others.

  • Wash your hands: Always wash your hands with soap after using the toilet, before eating, and when you’ve been outside.

  • Shower regularly: Aim to shower every day or after exercise to keep your skin clean and remove sweat.

  • Brush your teeth and floss: Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste keeps your teeth and gums healthy. Flossing before or after brushing will help with the areas your brush can't get to.

  • Use deodorant: Deodorant helps control sweat and body odour, especially after physical activity.

  • Hair care: Wash your hair regularly to remove oil and dirt, but how often depends on your hair type.

  • Clothing: Wear clean clothes and change them daily, especially underwear and socks.

Self-care isn’t just about keeping clean – it’s about making sure your mind and emotions are healthy too. Here are a few ways to practice self-care beyond hygiene:

  • Take breaks: Make sure you have time to relax and do things you enjoy.

  • Get enough sleep: Aim for 8–10 hours of sleep each night to help your body and mind recover.

  • Stay active: Regular exercise is a great way to boost your mood and reduce stress.

  • Talk about your feelings: If you’re feeling down, talk to a friend, family member, or trusted adult, like a teacher or faith leader.

If you have any questions about hygiene or self-care, you can ask your school nurse or GP.
