A period is a natural part of the menstrual cycle, where the body sheds the lining of the uterus if you’re not pregnant. Most people with periods will get them every month, and they typically last between 3 to 7 days. While periods are normal, everyone’s experience is different – some people might have light periods, while others have heavier or more painful ones.

Along with bleeding, some people experience symptoms like:

  • Cramps: Pain in your lower stomach or back caused by the muscles in your womb contracting to shed its lining.

  • Bloating: Feeling puffy or swollen, especially in your belly.

  • Mood changes: Some people feel more emotional or irritable in the days leading up to their period.

  • Tiredness: You might feel more tired or low on energy during your period.

  • Headaches or sore breasts: Hormonal changes can cause headaches or make your breasts feel tender.

  • Pain relief: Over-the-counter medicines like paracetamol or ibuprofen can help with cramps and headaches. A hot water bottle on your stomach or back can also ease cramps.

  • Stay active: Light exercise, like walking or stretching, can help reduce period pain.

  • Eat well and stay hydrated: Eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water can help with bloating and tiredness.

  • Period products: There are different ways to manage period blood, including pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and period underwear. Try different products to find what’s most comfortable for you.

Periods are different for everyone, but you should see a GP if:

  • Your periods are very painful or make you miss school or activities.

  • Your periods last longer than 7 days or are very heavy.

  • You haven’t started your period by age 16.

  • Your period stops suddenly, or you experience bleeding between periods (spotting).

  • You feel extremely tired, dizzy, or weak during your period.

  • Your school nurse can help if you have any concerns or questions about your period.

  • Your GP can offer advice or treatment if your periods are painful or unusual.
